When to get it People with diabetes are generally advised to get an HbA1c test every 3 to 6 months. You might need more frequent testing if you've recently been diagnosed, your blood glucose levels are too high, or you've changed your treatment plan. What the results mean A normal HbA1c level is below 5.7%, while a level between 5.7% and 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and a level of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. An HbA1c level of 7% or less is generally considered a target for people with diabetes.
